Is a general election on the way? The Workers Party is accepting applications from those wishing to run in future elections. You can use this form whether you wish to run in a Westminster Parliamentary Election, a Mayoral or a Local Election.
The Workers Party has a Candidate Selection Criteria agreed at a national level. The relevant sections are below.
CANDIDATE SELECTION CRITERIA 2027
The following applies to ALL candidates.
1. Prospective Candidates must complete the online Stage 1 APPLICATION FORM
2. Prospective Candidates must pay the established FEE before the application is considered. The FEE (£250) is for the purposes of administering the process and is non-negotiable and non-returnable.
3. Initial checks are completed by the REGIONAL ORGANISER and any local selections team they may establish in their Area as designated by the party leadership.
4. Recommendations are made to the National Elections Coordinator and decisions / selections taken at the Political Committee level.
5. APPROVAL is given by the Nominating Officer after Political Committee sign-off.
6. For the purposes of selections in Local Elections 2027 and any forthcoming parliamentary General Election (and any by-election) the GREATER MANCHESTER and BIRMINGHAM areas are considered High Priority Areas and subject to additional locally set selection criteria. These criteria are connected with ensuring that a Candidate has enough local members in their area, and enough finances, to support a credible campaign.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Previous Applicants & Candidates
1. Any person previously standing (successfully or otherwise in local or national contests) for the Workers Party must complete a new APPLICATION FORM for each electoral contest.
2. Previous applicants must demonstrate that they have recruited to membership at least ten NEW members.
3. New applicants must be able to register a minimum of ten NEW members in their chosen area, demonstrating that they have the base level of support to staff a basic campaign. In High Priority Areas (Gt Manchester and Birmingham) this number shall be set by the local leadership and is expected to begin with 100 NEW supporters as a minimum.
4. Candidates are expected to cover the costs of their campaigns in full, the party will not be liable for any costs although will support with official Crowdfunding any successful prospective candidate.
5. For High Priority Areas, Mayoral contests and select parliamentary seats the financial resources available to a candidate will form a part of the criteria considered post-interview at Selection.
6. For certain seats (such as Mayoral campaigns or HPA seats) at least 25% of the total campaign expenditure agreed with the Party must be deposited with the party in advance of the opening of Nominations to obtain an Agreement in Principal to stand as a Prospective Candidate pending sign-off by the Nominating Officer.
7. Official Papers will only be provided upon receipt of the Signed Party Contract for Approved Candidates and Elected Councillors which shall be provided after triage.
8. Failure to observe the above conditions will result in refusal of a party ticket.
