Hygiene Poverty

Automated laundries are now popping up everywhere, in car parks, petrol stations, supermarkets precisely because washing clothes is becoming a major issue for workers.

The new jargon is "hygiene poverty". Our party has often been criticised for its commitment to publicly controlled laundries, some mistakenly think this item in our Ten Point Programme is chauvinistic, or aims to exclude men, some members get embarrassed and think its not a serious issue...

But rather than embarrassment we should champion our line, we are trailblazers on this issue. Sure, we can adopt words like 'hygiene poverty' but workers can see for themselves "laundry" "laundromat" and "laundrette" popping up everywhere. Why not socialise the ability to keep clean?

Middle class people often do not understand how basics that they take for granted - easy clothes washing, food preparation and nutrition etc are not available to many of our fellow citizens especially in depressed areas. The WPB is taking up the cause of hygiene poverty which sits alongside our nutritional and housing stances as an integrated approach.
