Peter Ford, Deputy Leader, visited Ribblesdale Cement Works on 18 November. Production of UK cement is at a 75 year low while imports tripled since 2024. Our party was invited to site by workers concerned about the future of British industry.
Peter Ford said " The cement industry is being crucified by the highest industrial electricity prices in the world. That's down to our reliance on expensive, intermittent renewables and carbon taxes. The cement industry is the canary in the mine for Net Zero. It will keel over if we don't wake up. Ed Milliband needs to stop virtue signalling and start saving workers' jobs."
Next Steps
The Workers Party is committed to a reversal of policies aimed at de-industrialisation. Our party has been a vocal critic of government policy towards Russia which has exacerbated spiraling energy costs. We welcome similar invitations to those industrial sectors in need of support, and we shall look to work with others in the coming months to hold a seminar with industry at which workers and others engaged in our productive industries start to develop a united challenge.
